Weather in India: Climate and Seasons

India has a wide range of climates because of its size, varied terrain, coastlines, and elevation. Conditions can differ significantly between northern plains, Himalayan regions, central India, deserts, and coastal areas.

India’s major weather seasons

  • Winter: generally cooler conditions across many regions, with substantial regional variation.
  • Pre-monsoon and summer: many areas experience rising temperatures before seasonal rains arrive.
  • Southwest monsoon: rainfall is important across much of the country, but timing and amounts vary by region.
  • Post-monsoon: some regions experience retreating monsoon conditions and changing rainfall patterns.

Why regional forecasts matter

National summaries cannot describe every local condition. Check forecasts for the specific city or district you are visiting, and follow official warnings for heavy rain, heat, storms, or other hazards.
